Two Russian senators have reacted to the phone call between the state and government leaders of Russia and the US, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.
Ukraine and European Union countries will be shocked by the contacts between the two heads of state and the EU will try to disrupt the emerging dialogue, commented Senator Alexei Pushkov.
On his Telegram channel, Pushkov wrote shortly after the news of the call broke: “The phone call between Putin and Trump will go down in the history of world politics and diplomacy. Even if it’s not a breakthrough, it looks very much like the beginning of one. I’m sure that people in Kiev, Brussels, Paris and London are now reading Trump’s long commentary on his conversation with Putin and can’t believe their eyes.”
The senator added that he believed it was possible that in Brussels and European capitals, urgent consultations are taking place on how to sabotage the emerging dialogue between Moscow and Washington.
The negotiations will undoubtedly be very difficult, the politician concluded, but the start has been made.
Senator Alexander Shchendrikov, representing Kaliningrad in the Russian upper house, was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying that the phone call was “undoubtedly a first step towards solving the conflict.” He pointed out that the military special operation would not have been launched “if the US government had been able to take into account the national interests of Russia.”
“The first conversation between the two presidents is, of course, a new hope for a comprehensive agreement. I am, however, deeply convinced that this agreement can only be achieved by fully taking into account the Russian interests and our president will undoubtedly achieve this” Shchendrikov concluded.
The presidents of Russia and the United States had their first official phone call on Wednesday, which lasted almost an hour and a half, according to the spokesperson of the Russian state, Dmitry Peskov. Donald Trump has also confirmed the call and a subsequent phone call with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
