Truck Traffic in Free Fall!

According to the latest data, the monthly traffic performance of heavy goods vehicles with at least four axles on federal highways in Germany has shown a slight decline. The calendar- and season-adjusted index for heavy goods vehicle toll traffic performance decreased by 0.1% in January 2025 compared to December 2024.

As reported by the Federal Agency for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) and the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Friday, the calendar-adjusted heavy goods vehicle toll traffic performance index stood at 1.3% above the level of the same month in the previous year, January 2024.

Economic activity generates and requires transportation services and a strong connection exists between the heavy goods vehicle toll traffic performance index and economic activity indicators, particularly industrial production. As the heavy goods vehicle toll traffic performance index is available about a month earlier than the production index, it serves as a precursor indicator for the economic development. However, a breakdown by economic sectors is not possible.
