An unscheduled stop occurred on a high-speed ICE train traveling from Basel to Hamburg on Monday evening, prompting a response from emergency services. The train, designated ICE 72, halted approximately 19:30 near the station of Bad Bevensen, Niedersachsen, shortly before its final destination.
Prior to the stop, several passengers reported experiencing breathing difficulties during the journey. A train conductor also alerted authorities to a pungent odor detected within the carriages. Following these reports, the conductor contacted both emergency responders and the police.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency personnel noted that the unusual odor had largely dissipated. The fire department then conducted measurements to determine the substance responsible, though the results remain pending.
Police confirmed that 39 passengers exhibited signs of respiratory irritation and received on-site medical attention. No passengers required hospitalization or transfer to a medical facility. After approximately one hour, the ICE 72 resumed its journey to Hamburg.
The Federal Police have initiated proceedings regarding the incident and investigations into the cause are ongoing.
