A couple has tragically lost their lives in a severe traffic accident in Espelkamp, East Westphalia on Tuesday, according to the Minden-Lübbecke Police. The incident occurred when the 77-year-old driver and his two-year-younger wife were traveling in a Mercedes on the Alten Postweg and apparently wanted to merge onto the B 239. At the same time, a 23-year-old driver from Diepenau was driving a Hyundai on the B 239 towards Espelkamp. The collision between the two vehicles happened for reasons that are still being investigated and both cars were propelled onto a sidewalk and came to a stop against a hedge. The couple did not survive the accident, while the 23-year-old sustained severe injuries. Due to the severity of the injuries, a helicopter was called to transport the injured person to the Johannes Wesling Klinikum in Minden. The area was cordoned off and a VU-Team from Bielefeld and firefighting forces were requested for assistance. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
