European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed continued optimism regarding a resolution to the escalating trade conflict with the United States, despite President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of planned tariffs.
Following Trump’s declaration of a 30% tariff on EU imports set to take effect from August, von der Leyen stated that the Commission remains committed to working towards an agreement by August 1st. She emphasized the EU’s preference for a negotiated solution with the US, reinforcing that it has consistently prioritized such an outcome.
Von der Leyen cautioned that the imposition of a 30% tariff on EU exports would significantly disrupt established transatlantic supply chains, with potentially detrimental consequences for businesses, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.
Simultaneously, the Commission President affirmed that the EU will take all necessary measures to safeguard its interests, including the potential implementation of proportionate countermeasures if required.
Looking ahead, von der Leyen underscored the commitment to strengthening global partnerships, firmly rooted in the principles of rules-based international trade, as a strategy to mitigate potential impacts while striving for a positive resolution to the trade dispute.
