Tourism Tsunami: Germany's Hotels Break 496 Million Overnight Record in 2024!

Germany’s tourism industry has reached a new record, with 496.1 million overnight stays in 2024. According to preliminary results from the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the accommodation sector saw a 1.9% increase in overnight stays compared to 2023 and a 0.1% increase compared to the previous record year of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2024, the sector recorded 31 million overnight stays, a 3.6% increase from the same month in 2023.

Domestic tourists accounted for 410.8 million overnight stays, a 1.1% increase from the previous year and a 1.3% increase from the pre-pandemic level of 2019. International tourists, on the other hand, saw a 5.4% increase from 2023, but a 5.1% decrease from 2019, with a share of 17.2% of the total number of overnight stays.

Hotels, guesthouses and inns continued to recover, but still remained below the pre-pandemic level of 2019, with a 2.2% decrease in overnight stays compared to 2019, but a 2.0% increase from 2023. Vacation rentals and camping sites, however, showed a different trend, with vacation rentals slightly exceeding the 2019 level (+2.6%) and camping sites experiencing a significant increase (+19.9%). Compared to the previous year, vacation rentals saw a 1.8% increase and camping sites a 1.4% increase. Other tourism-relevant accommodations, including rehabilitation clinics and training centers, recorded a 1.4% increase from the previous year, but were still 3.8% below the pre-pandemic level.

In December 2024, the accommodation sector in Germany recorded 31 million overnight stays, a 3.6% increase from the same month in 2023 and a 0.3% increase from the same month in 2019. Domestic tourists accounted for 24.6 million overnight stays, a 3.0% increase from the previous year and international tourists for 6.4 million, a 6.0% increase. Compared to December 2019, the number of overnight stays for domestic tourists was 0.5% higher and for international tourists 0.3% lower, according to the statisticians.
