The head of the SPD parliamentary group, Rolf Mützenich, has warned of the destruction of democracy and the rule of law in the US and Europe. He pointed to the US presidency of Donald Trump and the actions of some European countries, stating that “the rule of law can be undermined by a multitude of decisions very quickly.” Mützenich told the Welt am Sonntag that the destruction of democracies, freedom and the rule of law often occurs through a gradual process, adding, “once they reach a tipping point, it becomes difficult to protect and defend them.”
Mützenich also cautioned against the rise of the AfD in Germany, stating that it is “not wrong to warn early and resist.” He expressed concern over the AfD’s activities, saying, “for many people, what they experience with the AfD and its affiliates is already hell.” Mützenich noted that various parties are now pushing for the AfD to be banned, adding, “the danger is being recognized.” He also criticized the joint efforts of the Union and the FDP to work with the AfD in the German parliament, describing it as a “historic moment” that is not harmless.
Mützenich was critical of Trump’s announcement to negotiate with Putin over the future of Ukraine, stating, “I welcome all steps that lead to a ceasefire and reduce human suffering. However, nothing should be decided over the heads of Ukraine.
