Tiny Miracle: 265 Grams and a Fighting Chance

A tiny miracle of life has been born at the Dritter Orden Passau Children’s Hospital in Bavaria, Germany, weighing a mere 265 grams at birth. According to Dr. Matthias Keller, the hospital’s medical director and chief of staff, the baby girl, born in February, now ranks sixth among the lightest surviving premature babies worldwide and fourteenth among all premature babies.

While the hospital’s renowned team of experts in neonatal care is accustomed to handling premature births, Dr. Keller emphasized the exceptional nature of this case. “This birth weight is extraordinary, not just for our team, but for me personally” he said. “This little girl is a small miracle, as she is doing exceptionally well, having already quadrupled her birth weight and even drinking on her own. At such a low birth weight, the medical and care boundaries have been reached.”

The hospital’s medical team had to be extremely cautious, as even the smallest changes, such as a drop of water in the respiratory support tubes, could have been life-threatening. As a result, the baby received around-the-clock care in three shifts over several months.
