Time to Use 'Entire Toolbox' of Democracy

Konstantin von Notz, the deputy parliamentary group leader of the Greens, is calling for a decisive approach in response to the classification of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as right-wing extremist by the Federal Intelligence Service (Verfassungsschutz). In an interview with the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe (Monday editions), he stated that one must consider the “entire toolbox of robust democracy against extremists – not only a possible ban on the AfD.”

The party has been radicalizing for years and the upgrading by the Verfassungsschutz is therefore consistent. “It is logical that the Federal Agency for the Protection of the Constitution has decided to upgrade in light of the AfD’s rapid radicalization” said the Greens’ internal expert. In total, it is of central importance to reassess the handling of a party that is considered “right-wing extremist” by security agencies. “This, for example, applies to party and foundation financing” said von Notz.

The handling of party members who benefit from numerous advantages as public servants also needs to be reviewed once again. “In my opinion, the employment of people in the public service who are members of a party that openly stands against our liberal democratic order raises grave questions” said the Green politician. “Especially with regard to officials in the judiciary and security agencies, it is urgent to deal with these questions.” Here, all responsible parties at the state and federal level are called upon.

Regarding a possible banning process, he believes that it mainly depends on the CDU and CSU: “The Union must quickly clarify its position internally” he said to the Funke newspapers. “Because without the consolidation of all information and the approval of the Union, there will be no majority for a banning process.
