Ticket Price Hike Looms for Germany

The Deutschlandticket, a nationwide public transport pass, is expected to increase in price again starting in the new year. Following a meeting in Munich, transport ministers from Germany’s constituent states have reportedly agreed on a new price point of €63. This follows a previous price increase implemented earlier in 2024, which raised the fare from €49 to €58.

Speculation regarding a price adjustment had circulated in recent days, with estimates suggesting a possible range between €62 and €64. The Deutschlandticket has been jointly funded by the federal government and the states at a cost of €1.5 billion each annually, reflecting the understanding that ticket revenue alone is insufficient to cover operational expenses. A long-standing disagreement regarding the sustainable financing model for the ticket has existed between the federal and state governments.

The extent to which this latest price agreement resolves the broader and ongoing debate surrounding the ticket’s long-term financial viability remains unclear.
