Thuringia's Minister of Interior Urges Officials to Reevaluate Party Membership with Alternative for Germany

Thuringia’s Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) has advised the Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and his colleagues in the states to issue a warning to employees about potential consequences of engaging in the AfD party following its classification as “definitely right-extremist”. Maier told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” (Thursday edition) that it is necessary to “deal with the classification of the AfD as definitely right-extremist” and that Thuringia has “made experiences with this.” He recommended that all employees be “reinformed and admonished that there can be a conflict between their duties and party membership – although this alone is not sufficient, but there must be additional, special engagement.” Maier explained that “we have already had such cases and this leads to disciplinary consequences.” He stressed the importance of making this approach consistent across the federal government, states and municipalities and called for agreement on this matter at the upcoming Interior Minister’s conference.
