Thuringia Greens Report Escalating Harassment

A wave of concern has rippled through the German Green Party following the circulation of a letter from two local politicians in the state of Thuringia, detailing a significant increase in personal hostility and intimidation.

Felix Banaszak, the party’s federal leader, expressed deep concern regarding the accounts shared, stating he takes the matter “very seriously”. He confirmed the party’s leadership is in close communication with the Thuringia state branch and offers its full solidarity. Banaszak emphasized the physical and mental strain reported by the politicians as a worrying indication of a broader political reality that should alarm all those committed to democratic principles. He asserted that such treatment cannot be accepted.

The politicians’ letter raised questions about the safety of those in public office and underscored the potential erosion of democracy if individuals are deterred from participating in local politics. “When volunteers fall silent, the social cohesion of society is jeopardized” Banaszak warned.

The letter also conveyed criticism directed at Thuringia’s Interior Minister, Georg Maier (of the Social Democratic Party), asserting that the situation in Thuringia has not improved during his eight years in office and questioning the efficacy of his preventative measures. Banaszak echoed this sentiment, stating that the Interior Ministry bears responsibility for ensuring the safety of officials in the affected areas.

Banaszak has announced he will be visiting Thuringia during his upcoming summer tour, intending to engage with communities beyond those offering immediate support, actively seeking dialogue and addressing concerns. He concluded by reaffirming the party’s resilience, stating that attempts to intimidate or marginalize them will be unsuccessful.
