Three Arrested and Charged in Germany's Biggest Espionage Case of the Year

Federal Prosecutors Have Filed Charges Against Three Men Suspected of Spying for Russia

A Ukrainian, an Armenian and a Russian are the three men accused of spying for Russia, according to a statement released by the authorities on Wednesday. The trio is alleged to have been working on behalf of a Russian intelligence agency to target a former Ukrainian military fighter in Frankfurt.

The indictment alleges that the plan was to lure the target individual to a Frankfurt café in June 2024, where they would be identified and information gathered about them. The operation failed, however, when the intended victim had previously reported the incident to the police. The authorities believe that the action may have been intended to prepare for further covert operations, potentially even an assassination.

The three suspects were arrested in June 2024 and have since been held in pre-trial detention. The case is now set to be heard before the State Security Senate of the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt.
