German official’s future remains uncertain after migration deal post is abolished

The future of Joachim Stamp, the former special envoy for migration agreements, is unclear following the abolition of his post, according to a report by the German news magazine, Der Spiegel. Stamp, a 54-year-old politician from the Free Democratic Party (FDP), was appointed to the role in February 2023, created by the coalition government and situated in the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which was then led by the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

Stamp was responsible for negotiating migration agreements with countries to limit irregular migration and facilitate legal immigration. The decision to abolish the post was made at the first cabinet meeting of the new government in early May, with the intention of discontinuing the roles of 25 special envoys, coordinators and other officials with immediate effect.

Although Stamp’s contract with the Federal Ministry of the Interior is set to expire at the end of the year, he is currently working from the relevant department and has recently returned from a working trip to Morocco. The new Federal Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt of the Christian Social Union (CSU), has yet to indicate whether he sees a future role for Stamp, according to Der Spiegel’s information. Stamp no longer holds any party offices within the FDP.
