A German newspaper, the Tagesspiegel, has reported that the German Federal Police cooperates regularly with Chinese security forces. This information comes from a response of the German government to a small inquiry by the FDP faction in the Bundestag.
According to the response, there were a total of 35 “cooperation projects” between the German Federal Police and Chinese law enforcement agencies over the past ten years. The cooperation, which was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was resumed in 2023. The Chinese partners in these encounters were the regional public security bureaus, which are subordinate to the Ministry of Public Security. The German Federal Police is working, as reported by the Tagesspiegel, directly with the security authorities responsible for the so-called overseas police stations.
In September 2023, the German Federal Police met at the leadership level with the police in Hong Kong for an exchange of information. These security forces gained notoriety primarily for their brutal suppression of peaceful demonstrators.
