Prosecutors in Verden believe that a woman, a former partner of Burkhard Garweg, was an accomplice in the alleged crimes of former RAF members Daniela Klette, Burkhard Garweg, and Ernst-Volker Staub. According to a report by the German news magazine Spiegel, the woman was in a romantic relationship with Garweg at the time of the alleged crimes.
The investigation is based on messages exchanged between Garweg and the woman, which are believed to be linked to two robberies, one in Celle in September 2011 and another in Wolfsburg in December 2015. In the case of the Celle robbery, the prosecutors’ indictment alleges that the woman was aware of the planned heist and offered her assistance. A message sent by the woman to Garweg a day before the robbery stated that she would have liked to attend the final meeting and was eager to see the next day’s events unfold.
After the Celle robbery, the woman allegedly sent a message expressing her joy, while Garweg, according to the indictment, sent a message a few hours after the Wolfsburg robbery saying that the operation had not gone well and that he had made a mistake. The Wolfsburg robbery had failed because the driver of the money transport vehicle had managed to escape.
In response to a request for comment, the prosecutors in Verden confirmed that they are expanding their investigation, focusing on the question of who was involved in or supported the alleged crimes. Klette and her alleged accomplices, Garweg and Staub, are accused of a total of 13 robberies. Klette was arrested in Berlin in February 2024, while Garweg and Staub are still at large. The alleged accomplice, a woman, could not be reached for a statement, and Klette’s defense team declined to comment on the allegations.
