German Research Minister Dorothee Bär Sees Wissenschaftsfreiheit in the US Under Threat, Eyes Germany as a Safe Haven for Researchers and Students
In a recent podcast with Politico, German Research Minister Dorothee Bär expressed her concerns about the state of scientific freedom in the United States, stating that it is “clearly in danger.” In response, she announced that Germany aims to position itself as a safe and attractive alternative for international researchers and students.
According to Bär, Germany is already the second most popular destination for international scientists, after the United States and the country is now focused on strengthening its position as a hub for scientific freedom in Europe. To achieve this goal, the government is building upon existing programs, such as “1,000 Heads Plus.”
Furthermore, the minister emphasized the need for Germany to become a more attractive destination for students who would otherwise consider the United States for their higher education. Bär believes that Germany’s stable framework for scientific research, in contrast to the United States, makes it an appealing option for international students and researchers to pursue their academic and professional goals.
