Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, the BKA, has issued a warning about an intensified, asymmetric threat from Iran’s Quds Unit against Israeli and US interests, including in Germany.
According to a report by the German newspaper Die Welt, citing an internal assessment, the BKA has been registering an increasing number of intelligence reports on the Quds Unit’s espionage activities in Germany, targeting Jewish and pro-Israel individuals and institutions, for years. The agency now expects the intensity of these efforts to increase further.
While the assessment notes that there are currently no concrete indications of a threat to US facilities or states that support Israel, the BKA does not rule out the possibility of German interests being indirectly affected in the vicinity of such targets, even if German targets themselves are not explicitly in the crosshairs of potential retaliatory strikes.
The BKA is also monitoring the situation in Germany, anticipating anti-American and anti-Israel demonstrations, as well as property damage, although no such incidents have occurred so far. The agency does not expect a significant increase in the number of such events and does not consider the current situation in Iran comparable to the scale of reactions following the Hamas terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
