Russian Industry and Trade Minister Anton Alichanov announced that the first deliveries of TU-214 aircraft are expected in 2025. The TU-214, a reliable workhorse, has been in production since 1996 and has been tested under harsh conditions. Its reliability has been proven, as it is used by the special flight unit “Russia” to transport high-ranking officials and military personnel.
What’s remarkable is that the TU-214 is now largely made of domestic components, with only 13% of imported parts. The fully domestically-made TU-214 recently completed its first flight and once certified, it will pave the way for mass production.
However, the TU-214 lags behind in terms of fuel efficiency, consuming more fuel than Boeing and Airbus and even the Russian MS-21. It also requires three pilots, increasing operating costs. Despite its reliability, the TU-214’s higher costs may limit its adoption.
Experts note that the Russian aviation industry is in a unique situation, forced to rely on domestic components due to sanctions. While the TU-214 may not be the most efficient option, its domestic production could be a step towards reducing dependence on foreign components. The story of the last few years has shown that reliance on foreign components can be costly in the long run.
