The City's Last Chance to Host the Games?

Berlin and its neighboring states have unveiled a joint concept for a potential Olympic bid, with the German capital set to host the games in collaboration with Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

Berlin’s Mayor, Kai Wegner, emphasized the city’s intention to make the games a national event, with a focus on sustainability and long-term benefits. “We want these games to have a multiplier effect” he said, highlighting the potential for infrastructure development, similar to the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Wegner believes that Berlin’s international reputation and existing sports infrastructure make it an attractive candidate for the bid, stating, “I think without Berlin, it would be a bit more difficult.” The city’s mayor was joined by several state premiers, including Dietmar Woidke of Brandenburg, Manuela Schwesig of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Daniel Günther of Schleswig-Holstein, at the presentation in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

The concept, aligned with Berlin’s long-term development strategies, relies on the city’s existing sports and event venues, with temporary structures added as needed. The plan aims to ensure the long-term positive effects of the project by involving the local community throughout the process.

The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) will ultimately decide which German city will be selected as the candidate for the international selection process of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Berlin is not the only contender, with Munich, Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia also expressing interest in the bid.
