Thailand Cambodia Border Tensions Rise

Tensions have escalated significantly along the border between Thailand and Cambodia, culminating in reported exchanges of fire earlier this week. Both nations have accused the other of initiating the hostilities.

In response to the heightened conflict, Thai authorities have issued evacuation orders for residents living in border villages. This action follows a series of diplomatic maneuvers, including the expulsion of the Cambodian ambassador from Thailand and the recall of Thailand’s ambassador from Phnom Penh. A travel advisory has also been issued, urging Thai citizens to leave Cambodia and all border crossings between the two countries have been temporarily closed.

The Thai military has confirmed conducting strikes against military targets within Cambodia, reportedly involving F-16 fighter jets. The Cambodian Ministry of Defence has countered these claims, alleging that Thailand is attempting to forcibly seize Cambodian territory.

The dispute, which has simmered since the 1950s, primarily revolves around the contested territory surrounding the Prasat Preah Vihear temple, currently administered by Cambodia. Recent months have seen a marked increase in friction along the border. The situation has also triggered political fallout within Thailand. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was recently suspended following the public release of a recorded telephone conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, in which she reportedly made critical remarks about the Thai military.
