The confirmed death toll from the devastating floods that swept through Central Texas has risen to at least 67. Local authorities across several counties have released updated figures detailing the extent of the tragedy.
Kerr County, the area hardest hit, reports 59 fatalities, comprising 38 adults and 21 children. Tragically, 18 adults and four children remain unidentified. Travis County confirms four deaths, Burnet County, three and Kendall County, one.
According to measurements from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), river levels in the affected areas have largely returned to pre-storm levels. Despite this, search and rescue operations are ongoing. The Kerr County Sheriff’s Department has reported that eleven children and one adult remain missing from Camp Mystic.
Questions persist regarding the timing of evacuations. While the Texas Division of Emergency Management issued warnings about the potential for severe weather several days prior to the flooding, city officials in Kerrville have refrained from providing direct explanations as to why the camps were not evacuated sooner. Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice stated that the current priority remains reuniting the missing children with their families.
