Following what has been described as the most intense Russian aerial assault on Ukraine since the conflict began, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a leading European policy representative from the Free Democratic Party (FDP), has urged Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to promptly provide Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles.
Speaking to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers (in their Monday editions), Strack-Zimmermann emphasized the necessity of supplying ammunition and other military equipment to protect the civilian population within Ukraine. She highlighted several key areas of support, including bolstering drone production within Ukraine and the immediate delivery of Taurus cruise missiles, noting this would fulfill a previous commitment made by Merz, stating that he would facilitate their provision should he become Chancellor.
Furthermore, the politician, who chairs the European Parliament’s Defense Committee, called for the German government to develop a clear strategy outlining the security guarantees that Germany can offer to Ukraine in conjunction with European partners. She also stressed the need for increased pressure on European nations continuing to source energy from Russia, arguing that this practice contributes to Russia’s war funding.
