Stefan Kornelius, a long-time journalist at the Süddeutsche Zeitung, has been appointed as the new spokesperson for the German government. This was confirmed by the newspaper itself on Tuesday evening. Kornelius has been working for the Süddeutsche Zeitung since 1991, first as a correspondent in Bonn, later in Washington and then as deputy head of the Berlin bureau. As the government spokesperson, Kornelius is expected to take over the management of the Federal Press Office from Steffen Hebestreit next week. It is still unclear who the SPD will nominate as his deputy. The CSU is reportedly considering Sebastian Hille, who currently leads CSU communication in the Bundestag, as a potential candidate for the deputy position. No confirmation of this has been obtained yet.
