Syria Election Marked as Key Step

The German government views upcoming parliamentary elections in Syria as a “milestone” in the country’s political transition. A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, responding to inquiries from the dts news agency in Berlin on Monday, described the elections for the People’s Assembly, slated for September and based on a newly declared constitution from March, as “a very important step.

The electoral process involves a tiered system: approximately two-thirds of parliamentary seats will be filled through indirect or regional elections conducted by electoral bodies, while the remaining third will be appointed by the transitional president. The spokesperson emphasized the significance of the transitional president’s role in selecting these appointed representatives.

The German government stated it is engaged in discussions with the Syrian transitional government and is advocating for the political participation of all demographic groups, with a particular focus on the inclusion of minority populations.

Highlighting the necessity of inclusive elections as a prerequisite for establishing a peaceful and stable system in Syria, a government representative underscored the event’s importance following 13 years of conflict. The electoral process will be evaluated based on its transparency and the breadth of participation, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or religious affiliation.
