Swiss Authorities See No Impact from Tightened Border Controls Amidst EU Concerns.

The Federal Office of Customs and Border Security in Switzerland has not yet seen any impact from the intensified border controls implemented by the Federal Police. A spokesperson for the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (BAZG) in Switzerland told the newspapers of the Funke Mediengruppe on the late afternoon of Wednesday (Thursday editions) that they have “not yet noticed any changes”.

At the same time, the spokesperson for the Swiss authority said that the refusals from the German side are “nothing new” and have already been carried out before the announcements of the German government within the legal framework. “The BAZG is not noticing any changes at the border between Germany and Switzerland since the latest announcements” said the Swiss authority spokesperson. Switzerland is monitoring the development of the situation “constantly and should the situation change, the Federal Council reserves the right to react accordingly.”

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) explicitly allowed the Federal Police to refuse entry to people who express an application for protection at the borders with European neighboring countries last week. The German government wants to limit the flight immigration to Germany. EU law does not provide for such refusals. Nevertheless, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) said that it was not a “national solo act.” Germany is acting “in accordance with European law.
