According to SVT, a Swedish TV channel, a shooting occurred at a learning institution on the Risbergska campus in Örebro on Tuesday afternoon. According to the channel, multiple people were killed and around 15 were injured. The police initially confirmed that five people were injured, with one of the injured possibly being the alleged perpetrator.
However, the police later corrected their statement, stating that the alleged perpetrator is one of the dead, effectively acknowledging the presence of fatalities. The police did not know the identity of the alleged perpetrator and do not rule out the possibility of multiple perpetrators and a changing situation.
Svenska Dagbladet even reported ten fatalities, which was later confirmed by the police. The institution in question is an adult education center that offers language and integration courses for adult migrants.
The police confirmed that around ten people were killed in the shooting, with dead bodies found on the school grounds. It is unclear if there were any victims outside the school premises, as the police are still identifying the dead and making no statements about the victims, said Roberto Eid Forest, the police chief in Örebro.
The first reports of the incident emerged on Tuesday at around 2 pm CET, with the first shots reportedly fired at 12:33 pm local time. There are no reports on the background of the incident and no one has made any statements on the matter.
A video of the shooting has gone viral on social media, with the British Guardian reporting that the video has been verified as authentic.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has already commented on the incident, stating, “I have received information about the terrible act of violence in Örebro with a sense of sorrow. My thoughts are with the affected and their families. It is a very painful day for all of Sweden. My thoughts are also with all those whose normal school day was replaced with horror. To be in a classroom and fear for one’s life is a nightmare that no one should have to experience. The government is in close contact with the police and is closely following the development of the events. The investigation is ongoing and it is important that the public follows the police’s information. I also urge people to give the police the quiet they need to investigate what happened and how these terrible crimes came to be.
