Sultan to Meet Putin in Moscow as Nuclear Talks Resume

Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said is set to visit Moscow on Monday, shortly after the start of a round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran facilitated by Muscat. According to the Kremlin, the Sultan will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday. Iran and the United States began a new round of nuclear talks in Rome on Saturday to resolve their decade-long deadlock on Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, amid the threat of US President Donald Trump to resort to military action if diplomacy fails. Prior to the Saturday talks, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. After the meeting, Lavrov said Russia is ready to help mediate and play any role that is beneficial for both Iran and the United States. Moscow has played a role in the nuclear negotiations with Iran in the past, as it is a member of the UN Security Council and signed an earlier agreement that Trump unilaterally withdrew from during his first term in 2018. The Sultan’s meetings in Moscow will focus on cooperation in regional and global issues, according to Oman’s state news agency and the Kremlin, without providing further details. It is expected that the two heads of state will also discuss trade and economic relations, according to the Kremlin. Iran and the United States held a second round of nuclear talks in Rome on Saturday. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff negotiated indirectly through Oman, a week after a first round in Muscat that both sides described as constructive.
