A recent study by the Ifo Institute has revealed a significant correlation between the use of subtitles on films and television series and improved English language proficiency across Europe. Analyzing data from 36 European countries and incorporating the results of English language assessments, the research demonstrates a clear advantage for nations that opt for subtitling over dubbing.

The study found that, on average, countries utilizing subtitles exhibit an English language proficiency level more than a full competence level higher than those that primarily rely on synchronized audio. The exposure to the original audio seems to particularly benefit listening comprehension and speaking skills.

“Language acquisition doesn’t solely occur in a classroom setting; it’s largely shaped by everyday experiences” stated Frauke Baumeister, an Ifo Institute researcher. “Subtitles offer a simple, cost-effective method to facilitate improved English skills for millions of people, requiring no additional formal instruction.

The method used to present foreign-language content – with subtitles or synchronization – appears to be a determining factor in a nation’s overall English language capabilities. According to Baumeister, earlier adoption of subtitling by countries like Germany, which traditionally favors dubbing, would likely have resulted in a considerably improved average level of English proficiency.
