Government officials are resisting calls for a formal inquiry into the procurement of personal protective equipment during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hendrik Streeck, Federal Drug Commissioner and a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), stated in an interview Wednesday evening that he sees no justification for establishing an investigative committee focusing on the actions of former Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) at that time.
Streeck emphasized the existing inquiry commission as a more suitable avenue for addressing these issues. He suggested the commission’s focus should be on developing improved strategies for managing future crises, particularly concerning supply chain logistics and critical resource procurement.
Reflecting on the initial response to the pandemic, Streeck described a period of intense demand for protective equipment. He recounted discussions with health authorities during which concerns were raised regarding the capacity of smaller hospitals, with some even indicating they would be unable to perform essential procedures like appendectomies due to lack of supplies. The priority, he explained, was securing necessary resources amidst widespread shortages.
