Severe thunderstorms are expected across parts of southern Germany, primarily impacting the states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.
The German Weather Service (DWD) issued a warning Sunday evening, forecasting potential for localized flooding of basements and roadways, as well as damage to buildings, vehicles and agricultural crops due to hail. The current warnings are in effect from 7:20 PM to 11:00 PM local time. An extension of the warnings or expansion to additional areas remains possible.
A cold front associated with a low-pressure system currently located off the British Isles is moving eastward across Germany and is expected to displace the humid Mediterranean air mass with cooler air from the North Atlantic. This shift is driving the development of thunderstorms, which in some southern regions may reach the intensity of severe weather events characterized by heavy rainfall and large hail.
The DWD anticipates the thunderstorms will gradually weaken during the night into Monday.
