Stegner Sees Trump-Putin Meeting As Only Path To Peace

Recent diplomatic developments surrounding the conflict in Ukraine are prompting varied assessments from German political figures. Ralf Stegner, a foreign policy spokesperson for the Social Democratic Party (SPD), expressed cautious optimism regarding ongoing peace efforts, specifically highlighting the significance of direct communication between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He also stressed the importance of coordination amongst European nations prior to further negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Stegner characterized discussions between Trump and Putin as currently representing “the only remaining perspective” towards resolving the conflict, alleviating suffering, achieving a ceasefire, establishing security guarantees for Ukraine and ultimately, reaching a peaceful resolution. He argued that established strategies focused on military logic, sustained arms deliveries and sanctions have thus far failed to yield improvements and have in fact seen the military situation for Ukraine deteriorate. He suggested that advocating for a continuation of these existing approaches is unproductive and lacks a realistic basis, citing the ongoing debate surrounding the potential delivery of Taurus cruise missiles as an example.

Conversely, Heidi Reichinnek, leader of the Left Party parliamentary group, voiced pessimism regarding Monday’s meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in Washington. She anticipates a potentially humiliating encounter for Zelenskyy and believes it will further weaken Ukraine’s negotiating position. Reichinnek noted that Trump’s previously stated threats of severe consequences for Russia following the Alaska summit are no longer being emphasized.

She considers a comprehensive peace agreement to be distant, asserting that Trump prioritizes his own interests over those of Ukraine. Reichinnek urged European nations to initiate discussions with China to increase pressure on Putin and facilitate his engagement in negotiations.
