German Chancellor’s US Trip Ignites Talks on Future Cooperation with CDU Leader
The heads of Germany’s federal states are set to hold discussions with Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz soon, following the Chancellor’s recent trip to the United States. The Minister Presidents’ Conference (MPK) chairman, Saxony’s Regierungschef Michael Kretschmer, emphasized the importance of close cooperation between the federal government and the states in these times.
Kretschmer, in an interview with the Rheinische Post, stated that the Chancellor’s US visit and meeting with President Donald Trump had international significance, adding that the states respect and welcome the economic importance of the US-German relations. The Minister Presidents are convinced that they need to schedule a new meeting with the Chancellor and the Federal Government as soon as possible, according to Kretschmer.
Notably, Merz will not participate in the MPK’s meeting on Thursday, due to his visit with US President Donald Trump. However, a joint dinner with the state leaders is still planned for the evening of the following day.
