SPD's Surprising U-Turn on Israel

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul’s stance on potential sanctions against Israel has garnered support from the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The SPD’s foreign policy spokesperson, Adis Ahmetovic, emphasized the party’s commitment to upholding human rights and international law, stating that a “responsible examination” of arms exports is necessary.

Ahmetovic criticized the CDU and CSU for their criticism of Wadephul’s plans, calling internal disputes within the Union “not goal-oriented.” The SPD official also noted that breaking international law must be clearly acknowledged and reflected in government actions.

Wadephul had previously linked arms deliveries to a review of Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip, prompting criticism from within his own party. The CDU and CSU have since clarified that sanctions against Israel are not an option for them, with the new CSU regional group leader, Alexander Hoffmann, even ruling out all sanctions against Israel.
