In the lead-up to the German Bundestag’s discussions on Union-backed draft resolutions for a stricter migration policy, SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch has once again voiced sharp criticism of CDU’s chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz. “Who lets the right-wing extremists into their house won’t be able to get them out” Miersch told the Rheinische Post (Wednesday edition). “Midst instead of Merz: That’s the difference between a politics that brings our country together and a course that puts the principles of our democracy at stake.”
Merz had promised the public that he would never seek majorities with the AfD. “Friedrich Merz’s promise has been broken. How can one trust that he won’t seek cooperation with the right-wing extremist AfD after the election, if he needs it?” the SPD General Secretary said. If the AfD is celebrating the opposition leader’s proposals and laws, something is clearly not in line with the constitution: the laws are not based on the Basic Law” Miersch stated.
