In a recent interview with Politico, Saarland’s Minister-President Anke Rehlinger expressed her reservations about the “manifesto” of several SPD members, emphasizing a clear distinction between her views and theirs. While she does not share their opinions, Rehlinger believes that it is not necessary to reject every position one does not agree with entirely.
Rehlinger clarified that she had co-signed the SPD’s foreign policy line in the party’s executive board in 2023, which remains the foundation for the government’s work. The “manifesto” did not come as a surprise to her, as it was expected that some SPD members would take a certain stance. Rehlinger was critical of the statements made about Ukraine and Russia, stating that she does not believe Russia, under Putin’s leadership, can or will engage in meaningful dialogue at this time.
Regarding the criticism that party leader Lars Klingbeil has neglected left-wing positions, Rehlinger acknowledged that there are people in Germany who are strongly committed to peace and that perhaps the “manifesto” could be an opportunity to re-exchange arguments. She also saw no error in the integration of prominent critics, as everyone is invited to participate in debates. Rehlinger emphasized that people with a strong stance cannot be swayed solely by posts on social media.
Looking ahead to the upcoming party convention, Rehlinger stated, “It’s about gaining new strength – sometimes, indeed, through debates.
