SPD's Miersch Stays Mum on Consequences for Party's Top Spot

As the German federal election draws near, Olaf Scholz’s potential fate has become a topic of interest. SPD-Generalsekretär Matthias Miersch, however, has chosen to remain tight-lipped on the matter, stating in an interview with the German newspaper Bild that he will wait for the election day to assess the situation. “We’ll analyze and then take a look” he said, declining to comment on the potential consequences for the SPD leadership.

When asked about Scholz’s potential actions on the election night, Miersch replied, “He will have to decide that and it will certainly be influenced by the election results.” The SPD’s expectations for the election have not been met, with recent polls showing the party at a historic low of around 14 to 16 percent, potentially the worst result in the party’s history.

Despite the concerning polls, Miersch remains optimistic, citing the large number of undecided voters, with over 30 percent still uncommitted. “The surveys don’t look the way we would like, but: The institutes themselves say that this election is still not decided” he emphasized.
