The SPD warns against jeopardizing European unity in the asylum debate. In an article for the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), SPD deputy faction leader Sonja Eichwede called for responsible action in migration policy, combining humanity and order. She emphasized that European unity in the asylum area must not be endangered, as it is the path to more sustainable conditions. Pauschal rejecting asylum applications at the borders is not in accordance with existing European law, which the Federal Interior Minister also explicitly rejected in his recent directive. Eichwede trusts that the Federal Police will act in accordance with the law. Instead of unilaterally introducing stricter measures, close cooperation with European partners is needed, which is in line with the coalition agreement.
