German Politics Seek Compromise on Minimum Wage
As the designated SPD general secretary, Tim Klüssendorf, expressed his hope for a consensus in the minimum wage commission, he emphasized the importance of a joint outcome between employer and employee representatives. In an interview with Politico, Klüssendorf stated, “For me, it would be a value in itself if the employer and employee sides come to a common result.”
The SPD Bundestag member also reiterated the coalition agreement’s clear expectation, stating, “The expectation is clearly formulated in the coalition contract: we want the minimum wage to reach 15 euros next year.” He added, “If it’s just a little short, we wouldn’t follow up with a legislative process.”
The minimum wage commission is currently deliberating on a new recommendation for the government, which is expected to be presented on Friday.
