A political scientist has offered a critical assessment of the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) performance during the first 100 days of the current coalition government. Professor Wolfgang Schroeder of the University of Kassel suggests the SPD entered the coalition facing significant challenges and appears, thus far, to be struggling to adapt.
Speaking to “Der Spiegel”, Schroeder stated a clear strategic direction from the party leadership – co-chairs Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil – has yet to materialize. He described the dual leadership model as currently ineffective, suggesting both individuals are so consumed with governmental responsibilities that they have been unable to generate momentum or fresh initiatives for the party itself.
Specifically, Schroeder commented on the performance of Labor Minister Bas, who was elected party co-chair with over 95% support at a party convention in June. He indicated she appears uncertain about effectively utilizing her position, asserting her standing within the party currently rests more on perceived competence derived from her personal biography than demonstrable political action.
