The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has rejected calls from the Green Party and the Left Party for a parliamentary inquiry committee investigating the “Masks Affair” concerning former Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU).
SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch stated on Monday in Berlin that achieving full transparency is the priority and this does not necessitate the formation of a formal inquiry committee. He indicated that the upcoming hearing of Special Appointee Margaretha Sudhof within the budget committee on Tuesday offered a more suitable avenue for addressing outstanding questions.
Miersch expressed hope that the hearing would clarify remaining concerns, specifically referencing the redactions within a report published by current Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU). He highlighted that certain redactions appeared unrelated to the protection of personal rights, raising questions regarding the report’s completeness.
Furthermore, Miersch emphasized the need for a comprehensive disclosure of all personnel responsibilities involved in mask-related decisions during the pandemic. However, he also defended the actions of former Health Minister Jens Spahn, suggesting he has a strong interest in promoting complete information and transparency concerning the matter.
