The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has lauded the performance of their nominated candidate for the Federal Constitutional Court, Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, during her appearance on the ZDF program “Markus Lanz”. SPD parliamentary group deputy leader Wiebke Esdar told “Der Spiegel” that Brosius-Gersdorf presented her positions “objectively, impressively and convincingly” adding that her scientific expertise is undeniable.
Esdar expressed hope that the ensuing debate will be conducted at a “more objective level” by members of the CDU/CSU (Union). She cautioned that anyone wishing to protect the reputation of the Federal Constitutional Court should refrain from “unobjective defamation and untruths.
Brosius-Gersdorf was nominated by the SPD for the court and her election, previously agreed upon within the governing coalition, was blocked on Friday due to opposition from the Union parliamentary group. Following the setback, the professor from Potsdam confirmed her intention to remain a candidate despite the criticism. However, she stated she would withdraw her candidacy should her involvement threaten the court’s standing.
SPD parliamentarian Sebastian Roloff told the news magazine that Brosius-Gersdorf’s willingness to engage in public debate speaks volumes. He described her appearance as “highly confident” and emphasized that often-misinterpreted quotes could be contextualized. Roloff suggested that the Union would benefit from a more thorough examination of Brosius-Gersdorf’s actual statements, contrasting with the tenor of the debate thus far.
