SPD Names New Judge Candidate for Top Court

Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) have identified a new candidate for a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe, according to a statement by SPD parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch. While confirming the selection, Miersch declined to reveal the candidate’s name, emphasizing the need for cross-party consensus.

“We have a name” Miersch stated in broadcast comments, “but I will definitely not reveal it at this time”. He underscored the importance of negotiations with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), as well as the Green Party and The Left party, to secure the two-thirds majority required for appointment.

Miersch indicated a developing positive relationship with CDU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, but acknowledged recent difficulties in the process. The previous SPD nominee, jurist Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, failed to secure sufficient support from the CDU shortly before the summer recess and subsequently withdrew her candidacy. The party aims to avoid a repeat of this situation and secure broader agreement on the new nominee.
