SPD Leader Proposes 'Pact for Consequences and Reason'

SPD’s Rolf Mützenich Suggests a “Pact for Consequences and Reason”

Following the violent incidents in Aschaffenburg and Munich, SPD’s faction leader Rolf Mützenich has proposed a “pact for consequences and reason”. The attacks in Aschaffenburg, Magdeburg, Solingen and now Munich have struck a deep chord in people’s sense of security, Mützenich told the Welt am Sonntag. However, it is questionable whether stricter laws would have prevented the incidents – or if a more effective state, better coordination of responsibilities and a 24-hour presence of the foreigners’ office would not be more effective in addressing the root causes. There have been obvious shortcomings in the implementation of existing laws.

“I’m not shifting the blame to anyone” Mützenich said. “However, a state must be able to recognize where the real deficits lie. If they are not in the legal framework, they are to be found in the administrative handling of the situation.” Mützenich emphasized the need for collective action, stating that “a pact for consequences and reason” is necessary. “Anything else would strengthen political extremism.” The Munich incident should not be dragged into an already heated election campaign.
