Matthias Miersch, the leader of the SPD parliamentary faction, is maintaining that a potential banning process of the AfD is an option in the ongoing debate about the future of the far-right party. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), Miersch stated, “Of course, it’s important to address the AfD on an ideological level and neutralize them through good governance.” He further added, “The AfD is a right-wing extremist party, as confirmed by our constitutional protection. This classification must have consequences.” Miersch emphasized that the evaluation of the report and the court decisions should be the initial steps before considering a banning process. “The hurdles are very high and such a procedure should only be initiated after thorough examination. However, a banning process of the AfD is clearly an option” he said.
Looking ahead to the ongoing dispute between the SPD and the AfD regarding the Otto-Wels parliamentary chamber at the Bundestag, Miersch pledged his full commitment to preserving the chamber. When asked if the SPD could hold onto the chamber from the AfD, who has expressed interest in the space, Miersch affirmed, “I believe so.” He continued, “I will fight with all means to secure our current chamber. The decision will be made by the Elder Council, which will reconvene next week.
