SPD’s Matthias Miersch Dismisses Donald Trump’s Greenland Comments, Vows Stable Transatlantic Relations

SPD Secretary General Matthias Miersch rejected Donald Trump’s comments on a potential annexation of Greenland, saying, “There will be no Trumpism in Germany with the SPD.” In an interview with Politico, Miersch emphasized that the party has consistently shown no agreement with Trump’s views on many issues.

Regarding Trump’s statements on Greenland, Miersch stated that the SPD sees its role in organizing Europe in a way that prevents Trump’s ideas from being implemented. He added that the party is prepared for the government change in the US, saying, “The SPD is prepared for Trump. Above all, it is to be said that we have very stable transatlantic relations that do not depend on a single American president.”

On defense spending, Miersch was cautious, saying, “We will have to re-evaluate this after Donald Trump takes office.” He warned against a “bidding war with percentages” and emphasized the need to balance different budget items. “This will not be enough as the budget is currently set up.” However, Miersch reiterated that the party has consistently made it clear that there is no either-or situation, where defense spending is increased at the expense of, for example, weakening local governments or pensioners.
