Matthias Miersch, the General Secretary of the SPD, has been elected as the new chairman of the SPD-Bundestagsfraktion. He was elected on Wednesday morning with 83.2% of the votes cast, according to the faction. Miersch will succeed Lars Klingbeil, who took over the position of Rolf Mützenich after the Bundestag election. Klingbeil became the Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor of the new coalition between the Union and the SPD on Tuesday. Miersch became the acting General Secretary of his party after Kevin Kühnert withdrew in October. Before that, he was already the deputy chair of the parliamentary faction in the Bundestag. On Tuesday, it was reported that Miersch apparently intends to give up the position of General Secretary of the party but will remain in office until a successor is found.
