In ongoing discussions surrounding budgetary savings within the federal budget, Thorsten Rudolph, the SPD parliamentary group’s budget policy spokesperson, has advocated for reductions across all government departments and a fair distribution of the resulting financial burden.
Rudolph emphasized that ministers bear the responsibility for identifying concrete proposals for savings within their respective ministries. He stated, in remarks to the “Rheinische Post” newspaper, that the practice of publicly requesting savings lists from the Finance Minister while simultaneously pushing for substantial increased expenditure during internal budget negotiations must cease.
He further clarified that the SPD parliamentary group believes budgetary consolidation and equitable distribution of burdens must go hand in hand. The stated aim is to provide relief to the broad middle class, with Rudolph underscoring that those with the greatest financial means within the country should assume a greater share of the responsibility.
