A divergence in policy regarding arms deliveries to Israel is emerging within Germany’s political landscape, with prominent members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) voicing criticism of the federal government’s recent decision to pause certain shipments.
Markus Töns, SPD spokesperson for European policy in the Bundestag, stated he fails to understand the rationale behind the suspension, arguing it does not contribute to progress toward a two-state solution. Despite acknowledging criticism of the current Israeli government led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Töns emphasized the enduring commitment of the SPD to Israel’s security and the fight against antisemitism, describing support for Israel as a core tenet of the party’s ideology. He affirmed that Germany’s commitment to Israel’s security remains non-negotiable.
Fellow SPD MP Andreas Schwarz echoed these concerns, warning that the decision risks contributing to the political isolation of Israel amidst a brutal conflict. Schwarz argued that maintaining a strong stance against terrorism is paramount and suggested the move could be viewed as a victory for Hamas, the militant group that initiated the current hostilities with a large-scale attack on Israel on October 7th, 2023 and continues to hold hostages, including German nationals.
Schwarz maintained that an immediate end to the conflict is possible if Hamas were to release the hostages, disarm and abandon its stated goal of Israel’s destruction. He believes a firm response to terrorism remains necessary and that the current decision could undermine that critical message.
