The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Germany has expressed cautious support for the Gaza peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump.
Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD’s spokesperson for foreign policy within the Bundestag, voiced optimism regarding the potential for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the prospect of ending the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, securing the release of hostages and the demilitarization of Hamas. He stressed the importance of all parties adhering to international law and previously agreed-upon stipulations, specifically highlighting the need to prevent the annexation of the West Bank.
While acknowledging the need for caution based on recent events, Ahmetovic emphasized that international pressure will be crucial to ensure the agreed-upon goals are genuinely achieved. He stated that the time has come to bring an end to the conflict, underlining the necessity of Hamas’s agreement and the reliable implementation of the plan by the Israeli government.
